Lip filler is the treatment we are asked for most often at our Reigate clinic, and the one where the gap between a good result and an obvious one is narrowest. Most people who come to us want one of three things: a little more volume, better definition along the border, or correction of an asymmetry they have always been aware of.
All three are achievable. What is not achievable in one appointment is a complete change of lip shape, and we will say so at the consultation rather than after you have paid.

- You have lost shape in the cupid's bow or the vermillion border
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have an active cold sore or any infection in the area
- You have had filler elsewhere recently and we cannot yet see the settled result
- What you are describing would need surgical correction rather than filler
- You are under 18 — we do not treat under-18s under any circumstances
Some people are better served by not having treatment at all, and we would rather tell you that than take the booking.
How Dr Haroon Ashraf approaches lip filler
Assessment
The assessment is the part that decides the result, and it takes longer here than the injecting does. We look at your lips at rest and in animation, at the relationship between upper and lower lip, at the position of the vermillion border, and at how the lips sit within the lower face as a whole.
Lips treated in isolation, without reference to the chin and the perioral area, are the main reason filler looks done rather than natural. If what you want would be better achieved by treating a different area, we will tell you at this point.
Product and Placement
We use hyaluronic acid fillers exclusively in the lips, chosen for the individual rather than off a price list — the product that suits lips with a lot of movement is not the one that suits lips that need definition. Hyaluronic acid is reversible, and that is the reason we do not use anything else here.
Placement is what decides whether a result reads as natural, and it has to be built around your anatomy rather than a template.
Comfort
We inject with ultra-fine needles. They give the precision the lips need, and they are the least traumatic option — less discomfort during treatment, and less swelling and bruising afterwards.
Topical anaesthetic is applied first, and the filler itself contains lidocaine.
What the appointment looks like
Before You Arrive
You will be sent a medical questionnaire and consent form to complete beforehand, so the time in clinic is spent on you rather than on paperwork.
Ideally, avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. If you take any blood-thinning medication, let Dr Ashraf know — continue taking it as prescribed; it simply means bruising is a little more likely and we plan around it.
On the Day
Plan for around 45 minutes. Consultation and assessment come first, then topical anaesthetic, then the treatment itself, which takes 15 to 20 minutes. Most people describe mild discomfort rather than pain.
We photograph before and after at every appointment. Those photographs are yours, they form part of your clinical record, and they are only ever used elsewhere with your separate written permission.
Afterwards
Expect swelling for about two to three days. It settles quickly after that, and by day five to seven most of the swelling and healing has happened. Your lips will look fuller in the first 48 hours than they will once everything has settled.
You will have written aftercare before you leave, and Dr Ashraf's direct contact details if anything concerns you. We review at two weeks, included rather than charged for.

Risks, and how we reduce them
Lip filler is a medical procedure and it carries medical risk. Any clinic that tells you otherwise is not one to be treated at.
Swelling, tenderness and bruising for a few days. Small lumps that settle, or that can be massaged out at your review.
Prolonged swelling, asymmetry needing correction, a lump that persists. All are correctable.
Vascular occlusion — filler entering or compressing a blood vessel. It is uncommon in the lips, but it is the complication that matters, because it is time-critical. Delayed-onset nodules and infection are also rare but possible.
Which is exactly why who treats you matters. Dr Ashraf is a GMC-registered doctor, trained to recognise a vascular occlusion and to reverse it with hyaluronidase, the agent used to dissolve filler. He also teaches: over 1,000 doctors, dentists and nurses have been trained by him in aesthetic injectable technique and in complication management.

Lip filler FAQs
How long does lip filler last?
Typically nine to twelve months, depending on the product used, the volume placed and your own metabolism.
Will it look obvious?
That comes down to placement far more than volume. Half a millilitre put in the wrong place can change the shape of a mouth for the worse; a larger volume placed correctly, in proportion to the face it sits in, can look entirely natural. The aim is a result where you can see a difference but nothing announces itself — lips that sit comfortably within the range of normal human anatomy and proportion, built around your face rather than a trend.
Does lip filler hurt?
There is mild discomfort, and it is brief. We use topical anaesthetic, the filler itself contains lidocaine, and the ultra-fine needles we inject with keep it to a minimum. Most people find the anticipation worse than the treatment.
Can I have lip filler before an event?
Give it a week. Swelling is mostly gone in two to three days and by day five to seven the bulk of the healing has happened. If you want room for a review appointment as well, two to three weeks is more comfortable.
What if I don't like it?
Hyaluronic acid filler is reversible, so it can be dissolved. We would wait at least two weeks first, so the area has fully healed and settled — what you are looking at on day three is not what you will be looking at on day fourteen. We would talk it through at your review before making that decision.
I've had lip filler elsewhere and I'm not happy with it. Can you help?
Often, yes. We would want to see you in person and, depending on what has been placed and when, options may include dissolving and starting again, or correcting the existing result. We will not give you a plan over the phone for work we have not seen.
Do you treat men?
Yes. Men are generally after volume in the same way, but the proportions that read as an attractive male lip are different from a female one, and treatment is planned accordingly rather than applied identically.
